This month, for Volume 3 of our Straight from the Hearth series, we are doing something a little different. Read below for some thoughts on the development of the series from FORGE Director, Brian Ellerman.

Against the backdrop of a still-unfolding pandemic, I started the Straight from the Hearth series in April with a number of goals in mind: offer insight into FORGE’s founding and mission, provide a voice for entrepreneurs and the challenges they face, advocate for lasting change that improves the odds for all entrepreneurs.

My second note in May took issue with the CARES act and how badly it missed in helping entrepreneurs and startups, the real engine of the economy. That evening, the unrest in response to George Floyd’s killing turned violent in Minneapolis. The next day it reached downtown Tucson.

Suddenly, the issues I was calling out took on a new lens.

It is one I’m not very familiar with, so I’ve been listening and learning. I’m still listening and learning, and welcome your thoughts at bme@arizona.edu. I’ll be back in July with some notes and observations.

In the meantime, check out this outstanding editorial on income wealth inequality and social nets in America entitled ‘The Jobs We Need’ from yesterday’s NY Times. Many of the over 700 comments to the piece are worth reading as well.
